Day 11: Josh Wink “Superfreak” Freak
Taking trends, making trends and breaking trends, Josh Wink’s music (under its many monikers including Wink, Winc, Winks, Winx, The Crusher, E-Culture, and Size 9, Accent, Dinky Dog, J Dawg and The Crusher) has always experimented and influenced. The sound of Josh Wink today remains one of a man unafraid to walk the border between stylistic boundaries. Into 2002 and Josh Wink delivered ‘Superfreak’ –a release that again caught the ears of many and inspired many in the process.
In his own words:
“I got a new piece of studio gear from Roland to try out called the VP-9000 a ‘VariPhrase® Processor’, using real time manipulation processing to your sampled phrase, altering the pitch and time via a midi format. It was a cool piece of kit. Well, when I got in the studio and played around with it a bit, I was thinking how ‘freaky’ it was. So, I hooked up a mic, sampled myself saying ‘Freak’, created a sequenced line in my SH-101, wrote a simple 909 pattern, and tweaked away–and there you have it–Super-Freak. It was the first track that I made solely for the 20 to 20 LP.” –Josh
“A classic from Ovum’s own Josh Wink that was another huge record. The first time I heard this track, I just knew it was going to be huge. A very minimal record, but the results were maximal. Again another track that is still heard in DJ’s sets today and will be for some time.” -Matt
From the DJs and clubs…
Yousef: “Finally getting a full release, and not a moment too soon, I might add! Sick shit.”
Joel Xavier: “Very cool, very minimal, very Wink.”
Mimi: “Lots of minimal messing about with a nice electro influenced vibe”
Nathan Heam: “Majorly hyped by why not—the reason house music has worked for so long—dirty, simple, like an old ‘No Wave’ record, long since initiated by ESG, liquid liquid and the like.”
Justin Mills: “Typical Wink. Cheeky dancefloor techno, massive tune… Very similar to Dan Bell, which can only be a good thing. Cheers.”
Mortan Hunderson: “F*cking love it! Been dying to get my mitts on this for a while. This is right up my street. Squeaks, bleeps, etc. Will support clubs, radio.”
Cass: “Fucked up trippy business. I’ll take it.”
Dave Congreve: “A great piece of house music. Very distinctive, very well produced, and works anytime, anyplace, anywhere.”
Leo Elstob: “Boompty Boop! Love dat shit.”
DAZ Sound: “Acid Bline man. Wink does it again. Wicked!”
J. Lock: “Awesome beep and sleazy vocal hook, this tune slowly grows, so simple but so effective, and very hypnotic, with tribal and techno elements. Wicked!”
Aleen Simes: “F*CK!!! Best tune this year, no fair!!”
Kras Kurtz: “Magnificent minimalism! Old school vibe with top production values have this a sure fire winner. Really excellent.”
