Tomorrow is the Big Day: Day 15 with Rulers of the Deep
Aug 2, 2010 FifteenForFifteen, Uncategorized
Dear Friends and Music Lovers,
Ovum is excited to release its 15th anniversary album, Fifteen for Fifteen, this August 3. This digital comp album contains fifteen of our favorite tracks in Ovum history. You’ll be able to download all fifteen on Amazon and iTunes come August 3. Which tracks did we pick? Check back every afternoon as we uncover all fifteen, one by one.
Day 15: Rulers of the Deep “Track One”
Nominated as the Best Estonian Electronic Music Act 2008, ROTD has been in the leading front since the birth of the Estonian dance music scene. DJ Meri and P.Julm come from Tallinn, their blend of deep, tribal, tech- edged yet soulful house has become a trademark of the duo. ROTD is Estonian most successful dance music act – their original tunes and remixes are played all over the world, they have been signed under different labels, been djng many clubs across the world and their super hit “Planet Drum” was hitting first in history all three Baltic States MTV charts at once!
In his own words:
“This was ten years ago, David Alvarado was supposed to come over to Estonia to play at a Vibe party, but he got a back injury and in the last minute, our agency hooked us up with Dozia. As we heard later, Matt was furious because Dozia had to cancel Ovum night at Fluid in Philly. Dozia was like fresh breeze for us, friends from the very first minute. About a week later we started to jam in studio still high emotionally and we came up with our first track. We finished it within one day and at the very same time we came up with the artist name for the two of us: Rulers Of The Deep and Track One. For us it was so obvious that we will have to dedicate this track to DJ Dozia. And the rest is history.” –Meri
From the DJs and clubs:
JT from Top Tune: “Deep house needs to be made by a fat black bloke in Chicago? Bollocks. Just as DJs Merl and P Juim and the punters at their club. Vibe in Estonia, and the peeps at Defected who asked them to remix KOT’s ‘Finally’. And check this because this is about as deep as it gets—and for once deep doesn’t preclude upligting. Cure-like organs, pads and pianos equal layer upon layer of melody and charm. Then there’s the head-nodder’s dream drums—coming across like an old Red Zone rhythm and building into a mutha of a freeform episode—which push the track into the realsm of Larry Heard had he only studied harder at beat school. There’s one hell of a lot of talent out there in Tallin.”
Luke Soloman (Space/Various-London/Various): “I like this a lot!”
Danny Rampling: “A good record. Took me a few listens to get into but like it now.”
Steve Shiels: “Superb. Quality!”
Mark Wilkinson/Problem Kids: “Best eaerly/warm up track I’ve heard in ages – love it!”
Miles Holloway/Paper: “Good stuff!”
Silicone Soul: “This is class. Great to see some East Europeans get their props at last!”
Dean Meredith/Chicken Lips: “Real class deep house music – excellent!”
Nicky Holt: “Superb, seductive and sexy…”
Matthew Krysko: “Rulers of the Deep indeed – f**king blinding track. Works every time.”

The Fifteen for Fifteen Album Countdown: Day 14 with Jimpster
Aug 1, 2010 FifteenForFifteen, Uncategorized
Dear Friends and Music Lovers,
Ovum is excited to release its 15th anniversary album, Fifteen for Fifteen, this August 3. This digital comp album contains fifteen of our favorite tracks in Ovum history. You’ll be able to download all fifteen on Amazon and iTunes come August 3. Which tracks did we pick? Check back every afternoon as we uncover all fifteen, one by one.
Day 14: Josh Wink “Jus Right” Jimpster Remix
2010 Beatport Music Award Winner
We are very excited to hear that Jimpster’s amazing remix of Josh Wink’s “Jus Right” has won best deep house track at the 2010 Beatport Music Awards. Thanks to all of the Ovum fans who went and voted and an extra special thanks to Jimpster for the incredible remix!
Ovum founder, Josh Wink’s When a Banana Was Just A Banana is being hailed as one of the most prolific electronic albums of 2009, and in 2010 Wink returns with the first full length remix album, When a Banana Was Just A Banana (Remixed & Peeled). This album started coming together when some of Josh’s closest production colleagues inquired about remixing certain tracks from the original album; and after months of personally selecting the remixes, When a Banana Was Just A Banana (Remixed & Peeled) was finally born. From the deep tech of Martin Buttrich, Pascal Feos, and Chateau Flight, to the house grooves of Nic Fanciulli, DJ Sneak, D’Julz and Jimpster, to the full on floor fillers from Agoria, Slam, Radio Slave, and Benny Rodrigues, this album features a wondrous array of respected and talented producers. While their styles are very diverse, when put together this album evokes a cohesive sound that shines like the original.

In his own words:
“Glad this remix actually took place, as at one point I didn’t think it would! As I am a fan of Jimpster, and his deep and sexy signature house sound, thought ‘jus right’ would be perfect for him to remix. So, I sent it over and he replied by saying ‘Wow! What a track. Nice yeah. Right up my street, as you suggested.’ So we were on! However, timing wasn’t on our side, as Jamie was super busy with his releases, touring, Freerange Records and a new family member on the way. After some months passed and emails passed, we finally got our first draft, which was a great start. From there Jamie and I went back and forth with ideas to fine tune the mix, as he was completely open for suggestions. Two drafts later and some more tweaking, we got his impressive monster! I originally hoped it was a really really deep, sexy house track in Jimpster fashion. But, what came out was a tech ladened, deep and driving, bass and piano, sexy house stormer! It’s been huge every since, and we are extremely pleased!” – Jimpster

Day 10: Shlomi Aber “Freakside”
With “Freakside” Shlomi Aber delivers his debut release on Ovum. Shlomi is one of the hottest producers of the moment and he has delivered a 12″ that is totally Ovum. The original mix is an absolute roller. Shlomi knows how to deliver the groove. He manipulates the percussion to create a very cool rhythm that builds to a prime time climax that drops back into that infectious groove. (Source: juno.co.uk)
In his own words:
“Freakside has a funny story behind it. At some point during production, I was sure it would be too ‘freaky’ for anyone to like it, and at the end it turned out as my trademark. It’s the kind of track that only an open minded label like Ovum can pick up and make a hit out of it. It was the right track on the right label, which created the package and made it as it is.
Growing up and being influenced by the label over the years, I couldn’t be more honored to have Freakside as one of the label’s top 15 picks over the past 15 years .” –Shlomi Aber
From the DJs and clubs…
Tom Koenig “Really like Freakside – been playing it in my sets. Its been sent onto Mistress de Funk”
Nico “Great one. This guy is really on fire at the moment. In my sets and in my top 5!”
Amazing tunes!!! Been slamming them, included on my radio show as well – Greg Benz
I am loving this, best thing on ovum for ages… -Magik Johnson
This an amazing track!! Mark Knight dropped it on his Wrong debut and it smashed the place to pieces, and I rinsed it all last weekend…and peeps were rushing the decks to find out what it was….it is all about the Gel Abril mix.. pure quality!! -Raymundo Rodriguez
Geoff M “Yeah like this deep throbber a lot!!”
Dan Kahuna “Yup.. it’s reet good”

Day 9: Steve Bug “Summer Nights”
Germany’s minimal dance connoisseur, Steve Bug, started his DJ-career in a small after-hour bar near Ibiza’s Space back in 1991 – soon becoming resident DJ in the best club in his hometown Bremen and booked to major German events such as the Love Parade. Always crossing the bridges between house and techno with relaxed dignity, showing consequently that less can often be more, Steve Bug is soon to be acclaimed minimal tech-house master and one of the few gems of the innovative German electronic house scene. (Source: last.fm)
In his own words:
“Josh and I have a long history… Being a long-time fan of Josh’s productions and the early releases of Ovum, I asked him to do a remix for my ‘Loverboy’ track back in ’99. In 2004, I did a remix for Josh’s ‘516’ acid track released on Ovum, and in the same year, I thought it would be nice to have a full EP out on Ovum as well. So I sent some tracks over that ended up being released in the end of 2004. Soon, the business relationship turned into a friendship.
After that, Josh did an EP for poker flat and we have become even closer and have been playing various gigs together and been inviting each other to Ovum and poker flat label parties around the globe. To continue the story my new EP ‘As it Was’ will be released on Ovum later in fall this year.”
