In the 14 years Nic Fanciulli has been part of the electronic music community he has been pioneering in every aspect of his art; he has created a thriving record label, held down groundbreaking residencies world wide, had successful collaborations, made endless critically acclaimed albums, singles and remixes and even a had Grammy nomination thrown in for good measure…
Nic joined the music world at 16, where he worked in the local record shop and DJ’d in the local bars, in his hometown of Maidstone, Kent. It was here that he earned his first proper break courtesy of the town’s house institution ClubClass. Aged just twenty Nic became main room resident. Here he earned his stripes and honed his craft. Versatility and availability was the name of the game as his role changed week on week, he could be playing a solo 6 hour all night set or warming up for the likes of Laurent Garnier and Lee Burridge. The training set him in good stead as he went on to hold impressive residencies across the globe including a previously held a quarterly slot at Space in Miami; with one Space in the bag, another came in the form of that legendary terrace in Ibiza for which Nic played most Sundays for years. 2009 sees an innovative decision to explore the other delights Ibiza has to offer with a move to various dates at Carl Cox’s party at Space, Pete Tong’s Wonderland at Eden as well as Space’s prestigious closing. He also held a residency at the magnificent Il Muretto in Venice and finally back to Britain, where Nic has held residencies at Ministry of Sound, The End, Turnmills and now his “Saved” sessions are at club du jour matter, inviting esteemed acts Trentmoller and Greenvelvet, Francois K, Sneak and Carter, Jerome Sydenome, Dennis Ferrer and many others.
Nic’s production and remix work alongside Andy Chatterley, under Skylark and its bastard son Buick Project, has proved fundamental in pushing him through as both an artist and DJ. Essential new tune status is a regular occurrence for Nic’s productions and he has been called upon to remix a plethora of acts including Underworld, Tiefschwarz, Unkle, Kylie and Deep Dish. Critical acclaim doesn’t get much better than a Grammy nomination and that’s exactly what they got in 2007 when Buick Project was nominated for their remix of Tracey Thorn/Tiefschwarz track ‘Damage’. Nic went to the event and although they didn’t win, says its an experience he’ll never forget.
Another string to Nic’s impeccable bow comes in the form of Saved Records which launched in October 2004. Widely regarded as one of the leading cutting edge labels on the scene, Saved has gone on to release compositions from both established producers such Rolando, Paul Harris, Pete Tong and numerous up and coming talent including Joel Mull and Mat Playford. Nic comments “There is such an untapped pool of talent across the world at the moment that I want to help the new kids coming through get the recognition their music rightly deserves” new for Saved in 2009 includes tracks by Emanuel, Rainers & Andrea Oliva and Nic himself.
Add this to successful releases for Renaissance, Ministry of Sound, Ovum, and more recently Global Underground and it’s clear that Nic enjoys a very busy studio schedule. 2007 saw Nic join forces with James Zabiela for their One+One alliance, causing something of a press frenzy they toured across the globe, made some original productions and released a double CD. Wasting no time Nic then went back in the studio with Skylark partner Andy and the result was their first artist album; ‘I-Panik’ was released in November of 2007 with a full remix package. The likes of Laurent Garnier praised the album and the press were blown away – citing it as an original and intelligent piece of electronica. The remix package sees contributions from acts as diverse as Joris Voorn, Funk Dvoid, Joel Mull, and many others. 2009 saw a new union with uber-brand Global Underground, he was selected to launch a new series for GU, ‘DJ-01’ was a chance for Nic to explore a wide range of music over 2 discs. The release was also accompanied by a world tour and there are more exciting Nic/GU collaborations coming in 2010. Nic has also commissioned his own studio close to home to further immerse himself in his production efforts.
Recent accolades for 2009 include a remix for Layo & Bushwacka!’s ‘Raw Road’ on Omelto Records’, a single signed to Ovum, a remix for Josh Wink (also on Ovum); whilst Nic’s ‘Green Tea’ track was also in the Beatport Top 100 chart. A set at Cocoons 5th birthday celebrations in Frankfurt was an excepted booking with Nic destroying the floor, and a forthcoming outing to Berghain looks set to cause more havoc.
July 2009 sees the launch of the Nic Fanciulli radio show “World Sounds” hitting 15 countries around the globe, log onto HYPERLINK “https://owa.wharton.upenn.edu/owa/redir.aspx?C=760b84fdbf994d7cae0596d5db6e7dc3&URL=http%3a%2f%2fwww.nicfanciulli.com”www.nicfanciulli.com for full details of these, with a 2 hour weekly show, highlighting the best in the world of electronica with mixes, guests, upfront tracks and more.
